New to town. Who picks up trash, what goes in which bin, and how do I find my collection day?

Who collects

EDCO provides residential collection in Encinitas: weekly curbside pickup of trash, recyclables and organics from single-family homes [1]. Collection rates are approved by the City Council. The City's rates page has the rate information and notes that the Council approved proposed rate increases after a public hearing on May 12, 2021 [2].

The three carts

  • Blue: recycling, 35 or 64 gallons. Extra recycling carts are free [1].
  • Green: organics, meaning yard waste, food scraps and food-soiled paper, 35 or 96 gallons. Up to two extra green carts are free [1].
  • Gray: trash, 35 or 96 gallons. Extra gray carts cost a monthly fee [1].

Green-cart tips

Don't use plastic bags in the green cart, not even ones labeled compostable or biodegradable. Paper bags are fine [3].

Your collection day

Use EDCO's address lookup. Holidays that fall on a Saturday or Sunday don't delay pickup for the rest of the week [4].

Dumped items or overflowing public bins

Report them through the City's MyEncinitas system under "Trash and Recycling" [5].
